   4-03 A Family Affair   
      
      
      
               First air date Oct. 12, 1998.   
      
             The episode starts out with scenes from the "Sacrifice" eps, ending   
   with Gabrielle and   
   Hope falling into the lava pit.   
      
             Next, a man is searching for his dog at night. He finds the dog but   
   a monster kills the   
   dog and the man.   
      
   Then we see Joxer throwing daisies, Gabrielle's favorite flower, in to the   
   pit. Suddenly Xena grabs   
   Joxer's arm as she climbs out of it. She tells him Gabrielle is alive, she had   
   a vision, and that   
   Gabrielle would have gone home to Poteidaia.   
      
             Cut to Xena and Joxer in the marketplace at Poteidaia. Xena sees   
   Gabrielle in the   
   distance as Gabrielle turns around to see her. Before they can say anything,   
   Joxer is between them,   
   happy to see her. She hugs him, kisses him on the mouth, and he faints.   
   Gabrielle and Xena   
   embrace - a happy reunion!   
      
             Gabrielle says she sent messages to Xena but she says she never got   
   any. She tells Xena   
   she got knocked into a niche in the wall of the lava pit and was knocked out.   
   When she woke up she   
   called for Xena but she wasn't there. Xena tells her she saw a future vision,   
   so she knew Gabrielle   
   was alive. Joxer comes back to tell them there is something they need to see.   
   It is the man from   
   before, he is bloody and hanging from a tree. Gabrielle says there have been   
   animals like this but   
   this is the first man.   
      
             They go to Gabrielle's parent's home. They aren't happy to see Xena,   
   but they like Joxer   
   right away.   
      
             Xena hangs a bloody chicken from a hook in the barn trying to trap   
   the monster. There is   
   a thunder storm with lots of lightning. Gabrielle and Xena are in the barn   
   waiting. When lightning   
   strikes, they see the shadow of the monster - spikes coming out from all over   
   it. Then the chicken   
   is gone. The monster rushes past Gabrielle to attack Xena. She manages to get   
   away from it and she   
   and Gabrielle run to the house. They bar the door, it beats against it and   
   drives its spikes   
   through it trying to stab Xena. When the sun comes up, the monster goes away.   
   Xena tells Gabrielle   
   she wounded the monster pretty bad.   
      
             When everyone leaves to tend to Gabrielle's hurt knee, Xena tells   
   Joxer the monster is   
   The Destroyer and Gabrielle is really Hope. Joxer doesn't believe her until   
   Xena explains that the   
   monster ignored Gabrielle several times to attack her. She says that as long   
   as Hope thinks they   
   think she's Gabrielle, the family is safe.   
      
             While Lila is talking about Xena wounding the monster, Hope has an   
   angry look on her   
   face. Then she suggests she and Lila spend time together because after the   
   monster is killed she   
   and Xena will be leaving.   
      
             Joxer reminds Xena about Ares and the Fates, but Xena tells him   
   after Ares thought Hope   
   died, the debt Gabrielle owed Ares for sending her to Chin ahead of Xena was   
   released. She says she   
   never wounded the Destroyer, she just wanted Hope to think so, so she would   
   lead her to it.   
      
             Xena sends Joxer to scout the land and to count the flocks of sheep.   
   He falls asleep   
   counting them.   
      
             Xena finds out that Hope and Lila have gone walking. She runs to   
   catch up to them. Hope   
   redirects their direction away from where the Destroyer is waiting. They go to   
   a broken bridge.   
   Hope walks out on it and makes one of the supports break. When Lila tries to   
   save her, Hope spins   
   them and now Lila needs saving. Hope 'runs for help' while Xena manages to   
   grab part of the bridge   
   and then grabs Lila's hand to save her.   
      
             In the cave with the Destroyer, Hope searches for wounds. When she   
   doesn't see any, she   
   realizes Xena knows who she is.   
      
             Xena is searching for Hope in the woods and sees her. Joxer wakes up   
   and sees her too.   
   They both draw  their swords and run toward her from different directions.   
   Joxer gets to her first   
   and is knocked backward against a tree and is knocked out. When Xena gets to   
   her, she starts to   
   strike then realizes it's the real Gabrielle.   
      
             Gabrielle says she doesn't remember much - just falling, rocks,   
   fire, Hope screaming as   
   she died, then waking up in a hospice. Xena tells her Hope is alive.   
      
             Cut to Joxer tied up and hanging in front of the cave where the   
   Destroyer is. Lots of   
   bloody skeletons hanging around him. Hope tells him when it gets dark her   
   child will awaken and   
   will be hungry.   
      
             Xena and Gabrielle head back to Gabrielle's parent's house. Xena   
   tells her as long as   
   Hope needs them, they will be okay.   
      
             Xena goes inside and Hope has wounds on her. Herodotus wants to now   
   how Xena could have   
   let that happen, and she should go. Behind them, Hope makes two crossed swords   
   over the fireplace   
   move and point threateningly at Herodotus and Hecuba. She tells Xena to leave   
   before anyone else   
   gets hurt.   
      
             Gabrielle is hiding in the barn. She sneaks into the house where   
   Lila is. She tells her a   
   story about a rag doll so Lila will know it's really her. She tells her to   
   play along with Hope.   
   Lila leaves the room, but then Gabrielle sees Hope's reflection in a mirror.   
   Hope says, "Hello,   
   Mother."   
      
             Xena uses her Chakram to cut down Joxer then tells him to run to the   
   village and have all   
   the torches lit. She goes into the cave and gets the Destroyer to chase after   
   her.   
      
             Gabrielle can't understand why Hope isn't dead. Hope says the same   
   about Gabrielle. Hope   
   tells her Dahak's flame rose up to save her.   
      
             Xena runs into the barn, but Gabrielle isn't there. Xena tricks the   
   Destroyer into using   
   the long spikes on his hand to stick into the doors of a stall, trapping him,   
   But when she throws   
   her Chakram, he closes one of the doors, blocking it. He breaks loose and   
   raises Xena off her feet   
   by her neck. Hope, or Gabrielle, comes into the barn and tells the Destroyer   
   she wants to  kill   
   Xena with him. It is Gabrielle, and she lets him embrace her, barely able to   
   let it happen.   
      
             Xena suddenly buries her sword into the monster's back. It rages   
   around trying to get it   
   out. Hope comes into the barn and runs up to the destroyer, but thinking she   
   betrayed him, stabs   
   her downward with one of it's spikes. It then sees Gabrielle, looks back and   
   forth, confused, then   
   realizes it killed its mother. Together Hope and the Destroyer die.   
      
             Gabrielle is feeling lost and unsure. Xena tells her Gabrielle kept   
   her from returning to   
   violence and hatred - she was her way. Gabrielle asks how she can be Xena's   
   way when she's lost
