   4-07 Locked UP And Tied Down   
      
      
      
             First air date Nov 9, 1996.   
      
             The story starts out with Gabrielle trying to find knots in Xena's   
   shoulders and trying   
   to massage them away. She asks what Xena's been carrying on her shoulders. She   
   answers she doesn't   
   overanalyze her life like some people (Gabrielle).   
      
                They are both aware of six men sneaking up on them. Xena battles   
   four and Gabrielle   
   two. One of them  has an arrest warrant for Xena for the murder of a woman   
   named Thalassa. She says   
   she killed her because it suit her purpose. Xena says she will go back to   
   stand trial. She gives   
   Gabrielle her Chakram. Xena is chained with shackles around her neck and on   
   her wrists and ankles.   
      
             During the trial witnesses talk about the goodness of Thalassa. Xena   
   flashbacks to a cave   
   with Evil Xena threatening to kill a bunch of village women if she doesn't get   
   supplies. Thalassa   
   volunteers to stay if Xena releases the rest of them. She is tied down at the   
   edge of the lake/sea   
   where crabs begin crawling on her.   
      
             Gabrielle tries defending Xena, but Xena won't help in her own   
   defense and the evidence   
   is too much against Xena. She is sentenced to life imprisonment on Shark   
   Island.   
      
             On the docks Gabrielle talks to Xena, who tells her she's not   
   looking for redemption but,   
   rather, she needs something to make her feel complete. Xena is taken aboard   
   the prison ship.   
      
             In a tavern, Gabrielle is looking at the Chakram when the ex-Healer   
   of Shark Island sits   
   next to her. He says he just quit. Gabrielle asks the bartender when the next   
   ship sails. He says   
   in a week.   
      
             On the island the new prisoners (all female) and Xena witness a   
   hanging because a   
   prisoner killed a guard trying to escape.   
      
             In the prison Yard a woman named Ursina confronts Xena because she   
   sent Ursina to prison.   
   She sics her followers on Xena, who beats them up. Ursina says she wants Xena   
   along because they   
   are planning an escape. Xena refuses.   
      
             Later the woman who was hanged is starting to smell the Captain of   
   the Guard (C0tG) tells   
   another guard to cut her down and throw her to the sharks. Xena asks if she   
   can bury her. He says   
   yes and at night during a thunderstorm, Xena buries her and erects some kind   
   of marker or shrine   
   made out of small logs.   
      
             The next day Xena tries helping a woman who is too weak to unload   
   barrels from a supply   
   wagon. The CotG tells Xena to unload it by herself. When aonther woman tires   
   to help he says to   
   give her 3 three lashes. Xena goes berserk and starts beating up the guards,   
   suing a short rope   
   with a noose tied to the end of it.   
      
             The warden, a woman wearing a black hood, tells Xena to stop   
   fighting. The guards grab   
   Xena. The warden is Thalassa wearing a prosthetic wooden arm and hand. She has   
   Xena taken inside   
   where she is chained around the neck with her hands behind her and her feet   
   chained.   
      
             Xena is thrown down into a pit about 20 - 30 feet below. Thalassa   
   tells Xena she is being   
   punished for a crime she didn't commit. Many many rats begin climbing all over   
   Xena.   
      
             The new Healer has arrived and it is Gabrielle wearing the clothes   
   the old Healer was   
   wearing. Thalassa is surprised it is a woman. Gabrielle convinces her she is a   
   real Healer and   
   begins examining the stump of Thalassa arm.   
      
             Down in the pit, Xena starts fighting the rats, biting them and   
   throwing them aside.   
      
             Thalassa tells Gabrielle she has warmth and beauty like she used to   
   have. Gabrielle tells   
   her if she gave herself a chance she might rediscover it.   
      
             Gabrielle is being accompanied by two guards making her rounds. She   
   uses a broom to knock   
   them out and goes looking for Xena. She looks through a locked door with bars   
   calling for Xena.   
   Xena yells back from the pit. Gabrielle rolls the Chakram toward the pit but   
   it falls down on the   
   bars just as guards capture her.   
      
             Thalassa accuses  Gabrielle of befriending her only to find Xena.   
   Gabrielle says that   
   since Thalassa is alive Xena should be retried. The CotG reminds Thalassa of   
   the rules about trying   
   to free a prisoner.   
      
             Down in the yard the CotG has another batch of newbies. He brings   
   Gabrielle out and says   
   she is to die for trying to help a prisoner escape.  She is taken up to the   
   gallows and a noose is   
   put around her neck.   
      
             Xena grabs a dead rat by its tail and flings it up to hit the   
   Chakram which falls down   
   and cuts through the chains.   
      
             Thalassa can't give the order to hang Gabrielle, but the CotG does   
   and just as  Gabrielle   
   starts to fall the Chakram cuts though the rope. Xena and all the prisoners   
   start fighting the   
   guards.   
      
             Xena tells Gabrielle to take Thalassa to safety. They go up to her   
   office where Gabrielle   
   bars the door and grabs a staff for protection. Ursina and her followers break   
   down the door.   
   Gabrielle beats off four of them but Ursina gets the staff away from her and   
   Gabrielle is thrown   
   against the stone wall and knocked out. Xena arrives in time to save Thalassa   
   and she and Ursina   
   fight.   
      
             Xena knocks Ursina through a window and down to the yard, then jumps   
   down after her. They   
   fight some more until Xena wins.   
      
             Afterward, Thalassa comes to Xena and Gabrielle, and Xena says she   
   knows she can't asks   
   for Thalassa's forgiveness. Thalassa  tells Xena that Gabrielle helped her get   
   back in touch with   
   her soul.   
      
             Gabrielle asks Xena if she can forgive herself. Xena says she can't   
   but won't let that   
   stop her from doing as much good as she can. Gabrielle says not as long as   
   she's around. And she   
   gives Xena the Chakram back.   
      
   .................   
      
             Not too bad of an episode. A lot going on with the flashbacks, the   
   prison fights and   
   Gabrielle showing she has what it takes to be a real Healer.   
      
             *The good things first -   
      
             Gabrielle massaging Xena's shoulders without her armor on.   
      
             Gabrielle's valiant try to defend Xena.   
      
             Gabrielle's clothes as the Healer. As I've said many times before, I   
   really like   
   Gabrielle wearing blue (even the cap wasn't so bad).   
      
             Xena burying the hanged woman during the thunderstorm, very dramatic   
   photography.   
      
             Xena putting the fear of the gods into the rats after using only her   
   teeth to fight them   
   off.   
      
             In the final scene, Xena REALLY looked beaten and worn down from her   
   ordeal. Something we   
   rarely see.
