   How about if they just have a storyline that does not include Ares?   
   They can't really get rid of him because he's still around in the   
   Janice / Mel episode and the future eps.   
      
    Or they can tailor-make a script that allows them to insert him into   
   scenes with scenes   
   from the TV series when they need him. Tricky, but it can be done (look at   
   some TV commercials).   
    Or, like you said, just not include Ares. Many of the episodes didn't.

   some research to find out just how many eps Ares was in, and ditto Aphrodite,   
   Cyrene, Callisto,
