It was [according to Steven, anyway] a reflection of the old
Greek myths and tragedies. Sometimes the hero has to die. For
him, the whole tale was as much about Gabrielle's journey as it
   was Xena's.

His 6th season scenario would have been a lead-up to the Xena
version of Armageddon, with the mother and father of all battles
at the end. By that time, Xena would know [at least privately]
that Gabrielle was the best hope for the future of mankind. So,
he envisioned her giving her life to save Gabrielle. At the end,
all the survivors would turn to Gabrielle and ask her to help
them. And, just behind the new leader would be the shadowy
ghostly figure of Xena, with her hand on Gabby's shoulder.
