                                         1-22 Callisto   
      
   First air date – May 13, 1996   
   The episode starts out with evil warriors attacking villagers. The leader,   
   and even more evil (and obviously insane) woman lets one old lady live to   
   spread the word that the villagers were killed by Xena and her army.   
       Xena is in an inn and offers her ale to a man, Melas, he drinks then   
   introduces himself.  When he finds out who Xena is he attacks her, saying   
   she killed everyone in his village except the old woman, including his son.   
   Xena and Gabrielle set out to find who is using her name.   
       They pass refugees and one of them says his name is Joxer, he's a   
   warrior with a blood lust and wants to join up with Xena. She blows him off   
   and continues on to Corinth.   
       Melas attacks Xena again, and she ties him to a tree.   
       Xena and Gabrielle come into another village where the same warriors are   
   killing the villagers. Xena throws her Chakram and it is caught by Callisto.   
   Xena and Callisto fight on horse back with swords and then with poles. Both   
   are now on foot. Xena asks Callisto why she is impersonating her and   
   Callisto asks Xena if she remembers Cirra, and says her family died there.   
   Callisto flips back onto her horse and rides off.   
       Xena puts the Pinch on one of Callisto's men and he tells her Callisto   
   is going to kill the Oracle at Apollo's sacrifice the next day in Delphi.   
       He returns to Callisto's camp and everything he told Xena was what   
   Callisto instructed him to do. Joxer is captured and now wants to join   
   Callisto. She says if he can capture Gabrielle, he can join her army.   
       Melas has joined Xena to look for Callisto.   
       While camping for the night Gabrielle asks Xena about Cirra. Xena tells   
   her during a raid by her army a fire broke out and it swept through the town   
   and killed all but a few of the people, Callisto obviously one of them.   
       Gabrielle tells Xena that someone must stop the cycle of revenge, and   
   that Xena overcame her bloodlust. Xena says if something happened to her   
   mother or Hercules or Gabrielle she might revert. Gabrielle makes her   
   promise that would never happen.   
      
   Xena, Gabrielle and Melas arrive in Delphi looking for Callisto. They split   
   up. Joxer tries to capture Gabrielle but she disarms him with her staff,   
   then goes off looking for Callisto. Xena is in with the crowd when the   
   Oracle arrives. Callisto throws the Chakram at her but Xena deflects it and   
   catches it. Callisto runs the rides off and Xena chases her into the desert.   
   Argo catches up and Xena jumps onto Callisto and they roll down and down a   
   sand dune and Callisto is caught.   
       Xena is taking Callisto back for trial and Callisto continues to make   
   Xena feel guilty about Callisto becoming so vengeful. Xena offers to release   
   Callisto if she'll be good. But Callisto says she'd rather die at the hands   
   of the lynch mob Melas has formed.   
       Once again Joxer tries to capture Gabrielle but she punches him in the   
   nose, then give shim a rag to stop the nosebleed. She tells him he's no   
   warrior and suggest he try fishing. When they shake hands, he tries again   
   but she elbows him in the nose and stalks off.   
       While Callisto is in jail, she continues to make Xena feel guilty. Melas   
   throws a torch into Callisto's cell and the straw on the floor catches fire.   
   Xena opens the door to let her out but Callisto sucker punches Xena with her   
   wrist irons and locks Xena in the cell and escapes, snagging Gabrielle on   
   the way out.   
       In Callisto's camp, Gabrielle is hanging high in the air by a rope.   
       Joxer is back, and Callisto says he can join if he cuts Gabrielle's   
   throat. He can't do it and is tied up.   
       Xena rides into Callisto's camp. Gabrielle is hoisted back  into the air   
   and a torch is lit under the rope she is tied off with.   
       Xena and Callisto fight on the tall ladders used to climb up to the   
   various levels of her camp.   
       Using three ladders as a balance, Xena saves Gabrielle and then captures   
   Callisto again. As they are leaving the village, Gabrielle tells Xena saving   
   Callisto was the right thing to do and Callisto says that's what they think.

   I have to say it, so far this WAS the BEST episode yet. There is no one so   
   evil and so much fun to watch as Callisto. She had just SO many good lines,   
   I  HAVE to repeat them here:   
      
   Callisto:  “Well, I’m not afraid to die, if that’s what you’re worried   
   about.  What about you, Xena?  How will you feel to see your creation   
   executed without a fair trial, hmm?”   
   Gabrielle:  “Don’t listen to her, Xena.  You can’t torture yourself over   
   what she’s become.”   
   Callisto:  “No, no, no, of course not.  No, it’s not her fault at all that   
   I   
   dream every night of my mother’s SCREAMS coming from my burning home!  You   
   tell me Xena, do you sleep will at night?!”   
   Xena:  “No, I don’t.”   
   Callisto:  “Good-- well I can take whatever it is you think I have coming to   
   me.  But you tell me this, Xena-- have you ever been tried for all of the   
   things you have done?  Have you ever been handed over to a mob that wanted   
   your blood?”

   Callisto:  “The sight, just the sight, of Xena, Warrior Princess, arguing on   
   my behalf amuses me so-- let me tell you.  Let me answer your question of   
   what I would do if you let me go.  You let me go, and I will dedicate my   
   life to killing everything you’ve loved-- your friends, your family, your   
   reputation, even your horse.  You see, I am being so honest with you—because   
   the idea of your pity-- is worse than death for me.  You see-- you created a   
   monster with integrity, Xena.  Scary, isn’t it?   
   Now-- take me to the mob.”

   Callisto:  “Xena-- they’re coming.  But you know that already, don’t you?   
   What will you do?  How many of them will you kill? You’re beginning to hate   
   me.  You’ve fought it because of some silly sense of guilt, huh?  Now, I’m   
   a   
   painful reminder of what you used to be, and how you may never leave it   
   behind.  Ooh-- that crowd wants my blood.  Why not let them have me?  It’s   
   the   
   easy way out.  Nobody’ll blame you.”   
       Xena:  “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you without a   
   fair   
   trial.”   
       Callisto:  “You know-- there used to be some respect mixed up in my   
   hatred for you.  But-- tsk, tsk-- not anymore.  Your petty scruples are an   
   embarrassment.  As a villain, you were awesome. As a hero, you are a   
   sentimental fool.”
