|    Season ONe, Episode Seven -- The Titans    |

From: daviderl31@yahoo.com              The Titans              First air date: Oct 30, 1995              The episode starts with Xena sending Gabrielle off with Argo while she       fights the bad guys unarmed. But when Hesiot hijacks a horse, Xena whistles       for Argo, but Gabrielle has her and won't let her go, apparently, Xena is       angry and tells Gabrielle she needs to improve. Xena rides off, and       Gabrielle wanders into a cave where a woman is chanting, trying to awaken       the Titans. Gabrielle reads the chant the correct way and three of them       awaken – Hyperion, Crius, and Theia. They think Gabrielle is a goddess for       being able to waken them.               And when Gabrielle realizes she can control them and can do good with       them, she gets this very cute smile on her face.               Xena catches up with Hesiot in a tavern, captures him but then has       to face more bad guys. Gabrielle and the Titans save the day. But the Titans       find out she's not a goddess and take it out on the village.               The townspeople hide in the temple of Cronus, one of the dead Titans,       which is sacred to all Titans.               Hyperion tells them that unless they turn over Xena to him, he will       destroy every human. When he chases children into the cave, he starts to       kill them. And when Crius tries to stop him, Hyperion kills him.               After Xena rescues the kids, the townspeople capture her to give to the       Hyperion, led by Hesiot. But she escapes and Hyperion kills him and one of       the townspeople who helped him.               Now – Hyperion says he want to kill the humans because they will get in       their way in their war against the gods. But what I want to know is –       exactly what powers do the Titans have? Hyperion says he is the Sun Titan       (whatever that means), but other than size, and accompanying strength, what       can they do? One of the townspeople says the Titans are inextricable. But       Xena hurt Hyperion when she stabbed him in the bottom of his foot with her       sword when he started to stomp on Gabrielle.               The Titans can't fly, can't teleport, can't throw lightning bolts or       energy balls. So how can they hope to win against the gods?               But, back to the story. Xena is making plans against the Titans,       Gabrielle wants to help but Xena shuts her down, and Gabrielle says that       Xena doesn't respect her, a valid statement IMO. Or maybe she lost some of       the confidence in Gabrielle's abilities she was beginning to have.              The next morning, Xena finds Gabrielle and Phyleus sleeping together –       Gabrielle's almost love interest. And Xena looks a bit shocked, and . . .       jealous??               Gabrielle sneaks away to the cave to find the scroll with the chant       to turn them back into stone, but she is captured by Theia. Hyperion makes       her repeat the chant to wake up the rest of the Titans (either hundreds of       them according to Hyperion, or thousands according to Xena. Maybe they       intend to overwhelm the gods with sheer numbers.). But Gabrielle says she       isn't a virgin anymore and the chant won't work. So Hyperion decides to kill       her until Theia reminds him he said he wouldn't.               With a trap made by the townspeople, Hyperion's hand is caught and       Xena is about to kill Hyperion, stabbing him in the face or neck, I guess,       but Theia says if Xena won't kill Hyperion, she’ll give her the scroll to       turn them back to stone. But Hyperion says Gabrielle has to be a virgin, and       she says she lied, she IS a virgin. He gets mad and breaks out of the trap.               So why didn't Theia just give the scroll to Gabrielle, instead of to       Xena, who then had to get it to Gabrielle somehow?              After some running and dodging, Hyperion falls into a chasm as Gabrielle       finishes the chant. And the two remaining Titans are turned back to stone.               Just before they leave, Xena asks Gabrielle why she went into he cave by       herself and Gabrielle says she did it so Xena wouldn't hate for all her       mistakes. Xena says she could never hate Gabrielle, because her heart's       always in the right place.               The End.                      I'm not sure just how much I like this episode. There are parts that are       really good, mostly when Gabrielle thinks she is doing good things (and       being SO cute about it!). I guess Gabrielle is starting to grow on me       because I'm not really crazy about Xena criticizing her for things that       aren't necessarily her fault, like at the beginning when Gabrielle was only       doing what Xena asked – taking care of Argo.               One thing I noticed – Xena was back to wearing her sword on her hip, so       I'm thinking that this episode was originally intended to be aired before       "The Reckoning." Looking forward to seeing where Xena's sword is in the       next episode.               No Gabrielle yelling out "XENA!"               All in all, a entertaining episode. I guess I would rate it a six out       of ten.              David              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
