   3.19 Tsunami

First air date Apr 20, 1998.

The episode starts out with a ship being loaded for a voyage.

Cut to Gabrielle with a palm reader telling her she will go on a long voyage
and will meet a man. Xena walks in and interrupts.

Gabrielle gives the woman one more chance, and she is shocked at what she
sees -- great danger and death. Gabrielle says she described every day of
   her and Xena's life.

Xena and Gabrielle split up to buy supplies and food. Gabrielle sees
three slaves being loaded onto a ship. One is Autolycus.
She goes on board to talk to him, but is restrained. She fights back with
her staff, knocking several deckhands down. While she is being chased, the
ship starts to leave. Gabrielle yells for Xena who does several giant swings
on a bar, then flips through the air and lands on the ship.

The ship's captain says she tried to free a prisoner. The ship's owner,
Thaddeus, said it was a crime. His VERY young wife, Soraya, thinks maybe
Gabrielle can explain. She tells Xena about Autolycus. They go down into the
hold and Xena figures out Autolycus wants to go to the diamond mine to steal
   diamonds.

Soraya tells Gabrielle she is pregnant but Thaddeus doesn't want her to
   have children.

There are several jolts to the ship that Gabrielle, Xena and others
feel. Xena sees smoke from Mt Aetna erupting. They barely get down into the
ship's hole when a HUGE tsunami hits and turns the ship upside down.

Xena is frantic trying to find Gabrielle, and eventually does. The
ship's captain is hurt and unconscious. Thaddeus has a broken leg. Autolycus
gets out of the chains and frees the other two prisoners – Macon, a killer,
and Petrodes, a young man who is very scared.

Macon wants to get out going through the hull but Xena tells him they
are too deep, and the water leaks are from the pressure pushing the nails
   out.

Xena has a plan to expose the rudder shaft and then turn it so they will
get out of the current and land on a reef. They break through the housing,
and using a harpoon stuck into the shaft, they manage to turn the ship. It
   lands on a reef.

Macon tries to drown Thaddeus to save some air, but Soraya drive him off.

Xena has another plan to fill wine skins with air, cut through the hull, and
breathe from the wine skins while geysers raise them to the surface.

Petrodes starts to shoot Macon with a crossbow. Xena uses her Chakram to
stop him, but the arrow cuts a rope holding ballast or something and the
ship goes deeper and the deck is penetrated by sharp rocks on the sea
floor. Xena feels warm water coming in and says a geyser is on that side of
   the ship.

Autolycus and Xena breaks a hole n the hull to get out.

Autolycus volunteers to help Soraya with Thaddeus. Gabrielle and Petrodes
will help the unconscious captain. They all leave the ship. Macon loses his
water skin and fights Xena for hers. She beats him off, then goes back down
   after him.

On the shore Gabrielle sees everyone is fine. Thaddeus tells Autolycus he
will stop using slaves to work his diamond mine and will hire workers at
   decent wages.

Gabrielle helps Xena from the surf. Macon can't understand why Xena helped
him. He asks what she expected from him. She says from him -- nothing, but
   from herself – nothing less.

As they walk away, Gabrielle asks Xena what she thought of the palm reader,
and Xena replies it was as Gabrielle said – just an average day.

   ……………………………

Not a bad episode. Some pretty good things in it.

Always like to see Autolycus. But I didn't much care for his whining about
putting his friends in danger. It sounded like he was fishing for someone to
   say nice things about him.

Liked Xena's reasoning for saving Macon.

Kind of wondered where the light came from. It should have been pitch black
inside the ship. That would have driven me totally insane!!

The only really action was Gabrielle beating up the deckhands. I guess her
staff is at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in the hold of the ship.

   Petrodes was very annoying.

Kind of nice to see that Xena doesn’t have all of the answers right away.

I wonder how the ship's captain held his breath, or breathed from the wine
   skin, when he was unconscious.

How is it that Thaddeus expects Soraya not to get pregnant? With a young,
nubile wife like THAT don't tell me there was no hanky-panky / foolin'
   around. (wink wink; nudge nudge).

Mt Aetna (Etna) is on the eastern part of the island of Sicily, and it was
a very VERY big tsunami that hit the ship!! I wonder what kind of
devastation it caused when it hit southern Greece.

Macon (Tod Rippon) also play Goliath in 'Giant Killer' and in a couple Herc
   eps I didn't see.

Not such a bad episode, but not one of the best, either. I liked it all
right, but wasn't blown away by it. A seven out of 10.
