   3.17 Forget Me Not   
      
   First air date was March 9, 1998.   
      
   The episode starts out with a scene from "Maternal Instincts" with Xena   
   asking Gabrielle about Hope, and Gabrielle telling her she can't kill her   
   own child. Then Xena tells her Hope is a vessel for evil and nothing more.   
      
   Then we see Gabrielle as if she just woke up (maybe from a nap since it is   
   broad daylight), very shaken and upset. Joxer stumbles in and says they are   
   to meet Xena at the Temple of Mnemosyne. He sees she is upset and asks what   
   the matter is. She says her memories won't let her sleep or eat. She thinks   
   she is paying for something but doesn't know what it is.   
      
   Gabrielle goes to the temple and sees a woman with no memory coming out of   
   it. Gabrielle goes in after telling the guard she is ready to lose   
   everything she ever knew to get rid of the pain. The priestess tells her she   
   has all of Gabrielle's memories. Gabrielle pours water into a bowl, which is   
   her memories. Gabrielle agrees to go on the journey through her memories,   
   which consists of three rivers. The priestess tells her that if the bowl is   
   ever emptied, she will lose all her memories.   
      
   Joxer can't get in so he climbs a tree and through a window sees Gabrielle.   
   He falls out of the tree, throws dirt into the guards' eyes, and goes inside   
   to get her. The priestess tells him she is just a shell without her   
   memories. He takes her back to where they first met up.   
      
   The scene cuts to Gabrielle in a white toga and Ares is there. He tells her   
   he is there to protect her. She has her doubts. He tells her she is at the   
   River of Wailing.   
      
   Gabrielle wades in and sees herself killing Meridian at the altar of Dahak.   
   And then she is telling Crassus she won't let him die, then sees herself   
   walking away as he is beheaded.   
      
   Suddenly Gabrielle, and her toga, are covered with blood. She screams in   
   agony.   
      
   Next Gabrielle is approaching the River of Woe, which has chunks of ice   
   floating in it. Gabrielle is no longer bloody. Ares tells her this one is no   
   better than the last. Gabrielle says she is ready for this one.   
      
   Back in the woods. Joxer is going to read Gabrielle's scrolls to her to try   
   to get her memories back, but only the good ones.   
      
   Back to the River of Woe and Gabrielle is walking over a bridge of ice to   
   the other side. The bridge breaks up and Gabrielle falls into the water. The   
   scene goes to Gabrielle and Xena when Xena is about to leave Gabrielle to go   
   kill the Green Dragon.  Then we see Xena and Lao Ma flying together. Next is   
   Ming Tien's throne room and Gabrielle begging Xena to say she won't kill   
   him, and they can leave.   
      
   Gabrielle is climbing out of the frigid water and Ares sends a fireball to   
   make a fire for her. She says she can now go back because she has the   
   answer – she never came to terms with her mistakes in betraying Xena.   
   Gabrielle goes back into the river but the ice chunks crowd around her and   
   suddenly the river freezes over and Gabrielle is trapped underneath. She   
   manages to break through the ice and gets back out, still freezing.   
   Gabrielle says she can't go back and she can't go forward. Ares tells her   
   she has two choices – stay for eternity or die.   
      
   Back in the woods Gabrielle wonders if her top is enchanted since it seems   
   to get smaller with every story Joxer reads to her. He says yes THEY are,   
   then corrects himself to say yes, it (the BGSB) is. Joxer starts to read a   
   scroll about Callisto. Gabrielle asks if she was in love with him and he   
   says yes.   
      
   Gabrielle is at the third (unnamed) river of fire. She says she has to go   
   on. Ares asks if all the pain is worth it. Gabrielle answers yes, otherwise   
   what is the point of living. Ares tells her maybe all the pain she went   
   through with Xena meant zero. Gabrielle tells him things between them  was   
   worked out in Illusia.   
      
   Cut to the mausoleum with the ghosts of Ming Tien, Borias, Caesar, Callisto,   
   and Ares. Ming Tien sings the Hatred song. Then Gabrielle is on the altar   
   and Xena is on the cross. They begin singing the song about wondering how   
   they could have hated each other, etc. and the ghosts explode.   
      
   Gabrielle tells Ares it was worth it, and he asks her why she is still   
   there. Gabrielle walks into the river of fire. Flashback to Xena leaving   
   Gabrielle to go to Chin. Gabrielle asks her if there is someone she owes so   
   much to that she would throw away the past few years. Xena says yes.   
      
   Her toga catches fire but she makes it to the other side. Ares tells her   
   that her strength is gone. Gabrielle begins pounding the ground, gets naked   
   for a flash, then is back in her toga, unburned. Gabrielle realizes Ares   
   isn't the god, but her conscious. He admits to it, but that is only half the   
   key.   
      
   Flashback to Xena leaving Gabrielle for Chin. Gabrielle sees Ares and tells   
   her Xena would never do anything like that for her, and would he will send   
   her to Chin ahead of Xena if she asks, which he does.   
      
   Toga Gabrielle makes her staff materialize and begins trying to beat Ares   
   with it.   
      
   She admits she was jealous of Lao Ma and hated Xena for loving someone else,   
   and she wanted  Xena to be hurt and punished, but that her hatred and   
   jealousy almost got her killed.   
      
   The bowl with Gabrielle's memories appears and Ares tries to get her to   
   drink – to empty the bowl to lose the pain. Gabrielle talks about losing the   
   memories of her parents and her loves. Ares mentions the betrayal, the   
   killing and Hope. Gabrielle adds Xena. Ares says she will never miss what   
   she never knew.   
      
   Back in the woods, Joxer has finished reading the scrolls to Gabrielle. She   
   wants him to make love to her so she will remember the passion they "used to   
   have." Joxer finally confesses he lied about almost everything, that Xena   
   did most of the deeds. Then he adds except for them dancing nude in the   
   rain.   
      
   Gabrielle grabs him by the ear and says they never did that, nor would the   
   ever! The old Gabrielle is back.   
      
   She realizes this was why Xena wanted them to meet her at the temple.   
      
   Xena shows up and tells Gabrielle she talks in her sleep and that was how   
   she knew Ares was involved in getting Gabrielle  to Chin ahead of her. And   
   it was a journey Gabrielle had to make on her own. Gabrielle realizes if it   
   wasn't for the painful memories they wouldn't know what the good ones were   
   like.

   Another Xena-lite episode – VERY Xena-lite if you don't count the clips.   
      
   But it was very Gabrielle-heavy, so I liked it a lot. For that reason, and
