   He was mostly making it up as he went along.  There was a point where   
   he had something good going, but he chose to keep adding layers even   
   when it was time to start wrapping up (for the season 7 contract   
   expirations).  That led to more internal contradictions and pretty   
   much gave away that there was no wrapup and the emperor had no   
   clothes.  Then he snarked at the fans for being unable to be satisfied   
   while adding more dead weight to the story, breaking his promise to   
   keep Mulder and Scully platonic, killing off the Gunmen when fans   
   didn't support their series, etc.   
      
   It's a shame, because there's no reason the series couldn't still be   
   running.
