I think the idea is that your toes might be blue and no one would ever
*know* about it, if you had socks on. It's not the kind of thing that only
happens when someone is specifically concerned and goes out of their way to
check for it. You have to be able to see what's going on at *all* times.

I don't know if this is what I was referring to when you said I made the
comment about 'House', but the recent episode 'Frozen' did in fact
demonstrate this very well. House had the patient, who was on the other end
of a webcam at the South Pole, strip down so he could examine her body, but
she left her socks on because it was cold. Days later, after she almost
died, it turned out that her problem was related to a broken toe she didn't
even know she had, and if she'd taken off those socks House would have seen
   it immediately.

A blanket shouldn't be a problem, though. But on the other hand, if you're
in a coma, are you really going to even care? How can you be cold if you're
not even conscious? Scully, as a sentient observer, wasn't even in that
hospital room -- she was off gallavanting around, riding boats and talking
to her dad. What does she care if some body she's not even in is covered up
   or not?
