You guys are trying to think of 'Biogenesis'/'The Sixth Extinction'. As a
result of his previous exposure to the Black Oil, triggered by the discovery
of an alien artefact, Mulder begins hearing people's thoughts and having
other psychic experiences, somewhat like Gibson Praise. The alien DNA that,
as revealed in 'The Beginning', all people contain became activated to such
a degree that Mulder eventually ended up confined to a hospital bed,
basically nothing more than a big psychic brain, with his body completely
useless. (Except for when Kritschgau and Skinner temporarily brought him
back with a shot of phenytoin.) That is why CSM wanted to perform that
surgery on him in 'Amor Fati', in an attempt to tap into his special
immunity or powers or whatever (I'd have to rewatch the ep to get totally
clear on the details).

I have purposely left 'Provenance'/'Providence' unseen for the past few
years, so that I still have some new XF to watch someday. Perhaps I will
finally see them a few months from now, in celebration of the new movie.
