   Kurt Crawford pretty much explained all of that to him back in 'Memento   
   Mori'. In fact, I don't remember if it was ever clearly explained how   
   *Scully* found out about it -- it is entirely possible that Mulder is the   
   one who told her in the first place. Though she probably would have   
   confirmed it by seeing a doctor, being a scientific rationalist and all.

   In fact, the cross is the main thing that makes me wonder if Emily didn't   
   *turn into* all that sand, in some kind of bizarre alien rotting process.   
   That would make sense, since the cross would be left unaffected and would   
   probably end up in there pretty much exactly the way it was. But of course,   
   no one except Chris Carter and maybe Frank Spotnitz knows for sure.
