Most people don't. I believe this is primarily because she does not go out
and take rôles just to make herself more visible and famous. She tends to go
for 'artsy'-type things like 'The House of Mirth' and 'Bleak House', or
low-profile, lesser-known stuff like 'The Mighty' and 'Playing by Heart'.

The actual QUALITY of her work as an actor is very, very high; she really is
genuinely 'great', IMO. It's just that her work outside XF is not very
*visible* to the popular mainstream, so most people haven't seen how good
she can really be. It may also have something to do with the fact that her
filmography is not very large; she seems to have a tendency to really spend
a lot of time waiting for a project that she thinks is right for her, as
opposed to just doing stuff all the time in order to keep her popularity up.
