According to Mulder, what was going on was a controlled experiment. It was a
two-part process. First, the chemical LSDM, found in the secret crop
sprayings, brought on a psychotic state, along with an acute fear reaction.
Then whoever was running the experiment would relay disturbing messages to
the victims through the electronic displays, heightening their paranoid
state and suggesting that the only way out was to 'kill 'em all'.

Of course, Mulder's theory, in its entirety, was never actually proved.
There is no doubt that the chemical spraying happened, but the deliberate
messages are another matter. Another distinct possibility is that the
psychosis caused by the LSDM simply caused the victims to *hallucinate* the
messages in the electronic displays. In 'The Nitpicker's Guide for
X-Philes', Phil Farrand subscribes to this view, based on the fact that the
messages included the letter 'K' (as in 'KILL'). It is not possible to
   represent a K with a normal 7-segment digital display, and it's highly
unlikely that the Dark Force went around and replaced every electronics
display in town with a special variant that is exactly the same, except it
has two extra segments so it can make a 'K'.

On the other hand, if it was really a hallucination, what about the 'ALL
DONE BYE-BYE' message on Mulder's cel phone at the end of the episode? He
*was* sprayed with the chemical earlier, but it seems odd that that happened
about halfway through the episode, but Mulder did not have any
hallucinations except for a minor one at the very end. Also, there is no
indication whatsoever that Mulder was experiencing an intense phobic state
when he saw the message, as in all the victims. The most logical explanation
is that Mulder was right about the controlled experiment, and the last
message sent to him had nothing to do with the LSDM, and was simply someone
   messing with his head.

Kutner: But why did he test positive for syphilis?

House: Oh, wait, I know this!

Kutner: Either one, he has syphilis ...

House: I was gonna say that!
