]5:14pm (PDT+3) From:       ] seanc130@hotmail.com (Sean Carroll)              ]Sorry, but your analysis strikes me as almost       ] completely wrong, down to the slightest detail.              ]If he were trying to make the movie appeal to       ] 'the movie going fans, instead of the X-Files       ] fan base', it would have been almost exactly       ] the opposite of what it was. It would have       ] been full of cheap action and loud explosions       ] and super special effects. But it was all about       ] the emotional subtleties of Mulder and Scully's       ] relationship, and an old-fashioned moody       ] psychological story based almost entirely on       ] Vancouver-type heavy atmosphere. That's       ] precisely why it wasn't so successful -- it was       ] *nothing* like what you'd expect from a typical       ] Hollywood movie! (Well, that's *one* reason,       ] anyway -- the incredibly piss-poor job Fox did       ] promoting it also has a huge share of the       ] blame.)              I could argue your point, but I won't! You have your opinion about the       movie, and I have mine. What I will argue is what you said about Fox       promoting the movie. They gave away tons of 'Free' tickets to see the       movie. ( I received two myself.) And I saw a lot of previews for the       movie on TV, and in print. How much more promoting does a movie need?                     ]And, FWIW, the reactions I've seen here and       ] elsewhere don't at all support your conclusion       ] that it 'didn't appeal to the old X-Files fan base'       ] -- in fact, it seems to me that the more heavily       ] and obsessively people were into the show       ] back in the day, the more likely they've been       ] to be positive about the film. It's precisely the       ] 'Hollywood movie-watching general       ] public'-type folks who have been most       ] dismissive of it, not willing to give it a chance       ] because it wasn't an exciting summer       ] blockbuster action flick, but something that       ] required you to sit down, shut up, and pay       ] attention, and actually do some thinking.              If it appealed to the X-Files fan base as you say how come it only took       in $21 million in the US? That is about $9 million shy of the budget       for the movie. The first X-Files movie had a budget of $80 million, and       it took in around $85 million in the US alone.              ]No offence, but to me, you don't seem like a       ] true member of that core obsessive, er,       ] focused fan base. You've always seemed       ] more like a member of the 'movie going public'       ] to me, albeit one with more interest and       ] affection for the show than most. But -- maybe       ] I'm wrong -- you don't seem to me like one of       ] the ones who went to see the movie three or       ] four times, or took notes, or picked out all the       ] hidden references to XF producers and       ] directors and old episodes, or seriously       ] analysed the character development of Scully       ] and Mulder in relation to the way they used to       ] be on the show, or involuntarily cheered when       ] Skinner showed up -- all experiences that I've       ] heard many other posters here relate.       ] Therefore, it doesn't seem to me that you       ] really have a right to declare what did and did       ] not appeal to that fan base.              Sorry but I am not a member of the movie going public. In fact, the       X-Files movie (I saw it twice by the way) was the first movie I have       seen in a theater in over a year. I may not be an overly obsessive fan       of the X-Files, but I am a fan. I watched all nine seasons on TV, and I       own all of the DVD sets. Plus I have a huge collection of X-Files       magazines, books, comics, and trading cards, etc. I am a big fan of the       X-FIiles but I guess I am not a fanatic about all things X-FIles. What I       mean is just because you put an X-FIles label on something, (this movie)       that does not mean it is great.              ]Again, no offence intended -- I like you. But it's       ] just a fact. The evidence I've seen of the       ] reactions of true hardcore old Philes is       ] completely different from your assertions.       ] Most of them, in fact, seem to have had a       ] similar reaction to me: at first, huge       ] excitement at finally seeing M and S again,       ] followed by some level of disappointment due       ] to the slow-paced and low-key nature of the       ] story, followed by lots of thinking back over it       ] and hearing new details noticed by other fans,       ] followed by a reviewing with our initial       ] unrealistic expectations appropriately       ] adjusted, followed by a final verdict that it may       ] not have been the greatest thing ever, but on       ] the whole it was a competent and intelligent       ] film, much better than most of the crap movies       ] that Hollywood puts out, and we're just damn       ] glad that we finally got to see a new X-File       ] after 6 years.              I never said it was a bad movie, I just said that it could have been       better, a lot better! I was one of the excited X-FIles fans, and I could       not wait to see the movie. But after seeing it (twice) I was pretty       disappointed. It almost seemed like it was rushed into the theaters even       though they had years to work on it, and get it right. If they had got       it right, it would have been a huge success. And now the fact that it       wasn't, means we have to wonder if there will ever be another movie, or       is the X-Files franchise, 'Dead'.              --- SoupGate-DOS v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
