   That's not a very sci-fi fan-like thing to say!

FWIW, though Gillian is a wonderful and beautiful person and well worth all
the love she gets, it was always *Scully*, the character, who really owned
my heart. Partly because of the difference in personalities, but also
because I -- and almost all other fans -- can't honestly say we really
*know* Gillian, any more than we do any other famous person. We can know a
lot of facts about her life, and general aspects of her personality, but we
can't really *know* her. (And that's a good thing -- she deserves some
   privacy.)

Virtually everything about Scully's life, on the other hand -- even the most
private and personal moments -- is right there on the screen for me to study
and memorise. I feel that I can honestly say I genuinely *know* her, even if
she doesn't 'really exist'. Hell, for a while during puberty, I almost had
myself really convinced that I was having a transdimensional love affair
with her across the void between our universes.
