UPDATE: local and GMT times of N Am UFO
   14 Feb 22 11:15:52

   XPost: alt.paranet.ufo

This is an update to a prev post looking at the hour-of-day distributions
of UFO sightings in the NUFORC database.

Now including Canadian sightings, the update re-calculates the various
tables. I've put some plots up on the web page to illustrate the
additional 1000s of .ca sightings don't much change the overall patterns.

It was noted before a good chunk of UFO sightings happen around the same time
of day in GMT terms, indicating there may be some kind of "average drift"
and daily cycle to many objects seen across N Am.

The plots show the frequency of sightings in local and GMT terms as
well as local/GMT times versus the longitude of the sighting.
In GMT terms there seems to be a net east-to-west flow of UFO sightings.

The longitude by GMT plot shows a pretty tight line indicating GMT
times of sightings in the W of N America are generally later than
those of the E states/provinces which could be interpreted as rough
east to west net movement of a significant fraction of the objects.

Such a movement runs counter to the almost universal movement of
satellites that get a 10-40% boost in speed and/or cost reduction by
launching in the direction of the earth's rotation rather than against it.
And that may indicate a larger fraction of sightings are "unusual" rather
than low estimates of around 1-10% that are based on trying to debunk
sightings that "might be" something mundane.

It should be noted the plots include only those sightings that were
reported within a year of the event. It's assumed reports made much
later than the sighting may not have even approximately correct details
like time-of-day the sighting was made.

   PLOTS:

The frequency of sightings by local and GMT times. There is a
good peak around 3-4am GMT. This peak has moved with the
addition of the Canadian part of the NUFORC sightings.
Earlier, the peak was seen around 2-3am GMT. Given this peak
it might be guessed some part of the world with a local time
of midday at 3-4am GMT may be related to an operational origin
of some objects for reasons outlined previously.

These plots show the distribution of sighting time versus
longitude. In local time the best-fit line slopes in one
direction. But corrected to GMT we see a tighter fit to the
regr line and a slope to the other side indicating sightings
in the W of Canada and the US are generally made later than in
the E. The slope of this line indicates an approximate "drift
speed" of objects east-to-west. A substantial drift speed.
