how to spot asteroid mining (maybe :)

I've been looking more through some of the data for a random selection
of fairly remote objects in the solar system. The 18 obj in my
initial set show possible unusual apparent magnitude changes now and then.

We are talking really dim objects but still visible from Keck that
tends to look in on known asteroids and comets often enough to get a
day-by-day and sometimes hour-by-hour plot of various parameters
   including apparent brightness.

I've put these numbers for daily observations from 2006-2022 through a
program that spots unexpected changes in levels. Essentially a fancy
filter that lets gradual day to day changes slide but when something
dims or brightens way more than normal over the space of days then the
plot twitches above/below a straight line.

The plots for the collection are at .

As the comment says, some of the objects show the limit sensitivity of
the instrument involves with parallel bands of values across the plot.
I.e. daily variations are more or less random noise that fall into
   several "quanta" of measurement.

Other plots show a gradual brightening or dimming with anomalous
values starting way off the 0 ("normal") line and converging with 0
toward the rhs of the plot. This may (or may not :) be associated with
peri or aphelion of the relevant object. These things have an A of
   >1000 AU and (therefore ;) high eccentricity. So approaching max or
min distance might tend to become a bit non-linear and therefore peak
the interest of my filter program at that point.

Yet other plots suggest short periods where there was a large
anomalous brightening and/or dimming of the relevant object. But even
some of the other types show some points above or below the normal
noise levels that might be something interesting.

We have to ask ourselves what might change the apparent mag of an
asteroid or comet way out there past Pluto just one or 2 times in the
past 20y and only over a space of several days.

There would probably be a long list of possible things. But on the
"special interest" list is something related to Our Friends From
Frolix 8 (TM; not necessarily friendly).

In other work I'm starting to see strong correlations between the
movements of some distant objects are "certain activity" reported
inside the Earth's atmosphere. Would it not be interesting if the
timing of some of these "glints" or whatever way out there in the
solar system coincided with that Earth-based activity (or basically
anything related to Earth e.g. cosmic rays, weather or temperature
   variations at the poles).

Some people are looking for "tech signatures" around distant stars.
Some are even looking for the same kind of thing inside the solar
system. (And of course some are checking out LEO).

Wouldn't it be interesting if some of these glints are signs of some
kind of tech in action way out there in the solar system.

Number crunching and data snaffling proceeds...

But what is true and I'm actually being serious here, is there are, there's
footage and records of objects in the skies that we don't know exactly what
they are, We can't explain how they moved, their trajectory. They did not
   have an easily explainable pattern.
