Kirkpatrick2        ....              I posted something on this Mar 7th.              I find the paper somewhat disappointing. It almost amounts to "if UFO's dont       work the way what we expect then the sighting reports are wrong".              In particular, I think, that part of it takes aim at some Ukrainian       astronomers that earlier reported seeing light and dark objects crossing over       the sky "all the time" even during daylight hours. They did some very rough       but interesting calculations to        determine how far up in the atm the objects might be and therefore calculated       their speed given they were moving at quite a high angular speed.              A lot of people piled on that the results could not be possible and the       astronomers were publicly forced to back down. But the Ukrainian authorities       stopped short of removing the work from official websites.              I dont know much about Kirkpatrick, but Avi Loeb at one point was criticizing       scientists that ridiculed UFO reports as "impossible" saying he had seen many       things proved possible in his career that experts had thought impossible, and       compalined how older        scientists tend to support the status quo because it favours their careers.              Now, it seems , he himself is turing into an established scientists that       supports the status quo because it favours his reputation.              The other thing to note is the torrent of rubbish that has been written about       this particular paper claiming it proves the Pentagon believes a whole bunch       of things about UFOs when the paper clearly comes down on the establishment       side of things.              I also note that another physics group that is looking into unexplained       phenomena -- including old pre-satellite phots that show stars in some       position at one time and no star in that position at another time -- has       written a paper saying UFO's might        travel at high speed in the atmosphere and not burn like a fireball --       something Avi Loeb says in this paper and many other times as well :) -- using       simple physics and no new-fangled speculative physics.              So the paper may stay in pre-print form for a while. :)              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
