   The issue is that there's *Lots* of ways for a species to go extinct,   
   so a percentage has to go extinct and never reach tech levels beyond   
   us today.   
      
   In fact, we are MORE LIKELY, not less likely to go extinct than our   
   distant (and oh so primitive) ancestors, because not only are we   
   vulnerable to all the same threats that they faced but, we add new   
   ones!   
      
   We can destroy ourselves now, we have the technology, intentionally   
   and by accident. Homo habilis couldn't. At the same time, the   
   "Natural Disasters" capable of wiping Habilis out can wipe us out!
