   That and giardia are the problems here. There is controversy about the   
   effectiveness of the various tablets. Also with cold water it's advisable   
   to wait hours so you don't fill a canteen, toss in a tablet, and slurp it   
   down.   
      
   UV schemes are popular but they don't work well with cloudy water. Filter   
   systems may or may not be effective.
