|    Feds suggest ex-NOPD chief Michelle Wood    |

XPost: talk.politics.guns, alt.politics.liberalism, sac.politics       XPost: neworleans.general       From: democrat.negroes@do.it              A year ago, Michelle Woodfork was the interim New Orleans police chief and       appeared to be Mayor LaToya Cantrell's leading choice among six finalists to       helm the NOPD as its next permanent chief, and first woman ever in the role.              But according to the indictment of former NOPD Officer Jeffrey Vappie       unveiled by federal prosecutors Friday, Woodfork by then was already on thin       ice with Cantrell, over a decision to uphold discipline of Vappie for issues       with his timesheets while working on the mayor's security detail.              The indictment, which pointedly alleges an affair between Cantrell and the       since-divorced Vappie, notes the June 15, 2023 decision by Woodfork to       sustain the findings of an internal investigation of Vappie's conduct.              The decision came shortly after a disciplinary hearing, after which Vappie       "attempted to influence the Interim Superintendent into exonerating him by       contacting" Woodfork, the indictment alleges. It claims Vappie told her it       was her "opportunity to 'make it right.'"              A few months later, according to the indictment, Vappie was "present for,       and participated in" a meeting on Sept. 11, at which Cantrell told Woodfork       she wouldn't be the choice for permanent police chief. It's unclear why       Vappie was present.              Vappie's lawyer, Harry Rosenberg, had no comment on the allegations Friday.       Nor did Cantrell's lawyer, Eddie Castaing.              "It's an ongoing investigation, and I'm not going to comment at this time,"       said Woodfork, who now works for Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason       Williams.              Woodfork was demoted from the interim chief's post with the arrival of       current NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, whose selection took several       elected leaders off guard. The City Council ultimately confirmed       Kirkpatrick's nomination, despite some expressing dismay that Woodfork       hadn't been chosen.              According to the federal indictment, Vappie sought to "mitigate (Woodfork's)       disappointment" afterward by inviting her to a daiquiri shop to discuss it.              Woodfork, who held the interim post for the better part of a year, announced       her retirement from the force in February. Vappie retired from the NOPD       several weeks ago.              https://www.nola.com/news/courts/vappie-probe-may-have-cost-ex-nopd-chief-       michelle-woodfork/article_436bc88e-45ff-11ef-99c6-ef67292b84dd.html              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
