XPost: talk.politics.guns, alt.politics.obama, sac.politics       XPost: alt.fan.states.indiana       From: democrats@caused.it              CROWN POINT — A Gary man was sentenced to 55 years in prison Thursday       afternoon for the murder of a 23-year-old outside the slain man's mother's       home.              Virgil King, 24, was sentenced to 50 years for the murder of Daqwuan Walker,       23, plus five years on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a       serious violent felon, according to court records.              In January 2023, King and co-defendant Micah Sanders, 25, went to the area       of the crime in the 500 block of Chase Street in Gary and waited in an alley       for Walker to exit his mother's house. They both shot at him multiple times.              A jury found King guilty June 10 after a trial. Sanders was sentenced to 45       years in prison for the murder after he pleaded guilty to the crime in June.       Sanders and King were supposed to be tried together until Sanders chose to       take a plea.              According to a sentencing order written by Lake Criminal Court Judge Gina       Jones, the aggravating circumstances of the case outweigh any possibility of       mitigating factors.              Jones wrote that King's criminal history, including multiple juvenile       adjudications and felony convictions, warrant a higher sentence.              He also has a history of violating probation, the order said. King was       placed on probation in September 2019 after admiting he helped then-15-       year-old Chastinea Reeves hide a bloody, broken knife and bloody clothing       after she killed her mother, Jamie M. Garnett, 34, on Feb. 13, 2017, in the       4400 block of West 23rd Place in Gary. King also pleaded guilty to a felony       battery count in a separate case.              Finally, Jones found the nature and circumstances of the murder to be       "gruesome" and "heinous," according to the sentencing order.              The men fled the scene of the shooting and hid out at a friend's home,       according to a probable cause affidavit.              A Gary Police Department dog tracked the suspects from the crime scene       through the backyard of a home on Taney Place to another home in the 2500       block of Waverly Drive, about five blocks from where Walker was killed.              According to court records, police saw a suspect attempt to exit through a       window in the back of the house with what appeared to be an object       resembling a gun before going back into the house. A resident in the house       said he saw the handgun sticking out of the suspect's pocket.              Residents in the Waverly Drive home said the men started to remove their       coats and one of them removed his bulletproof vest, according to police. A       witness said one of the men put an object in a closet, police said, and       investigators later recovered a loaded, tan handgun.              https://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/crime-courts/gary-man-sentenced-to-55-       years-for-murdering-man-outside-his-mothers-home-crime-       courts/article_0238d58a-4859-11ef-ab21-4ffc377e1db1.html              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
