MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A family is searching for answers after human remains were
found inside a burned out car, days after that car was towed to the Memphis
   Police impound lot.

Police said Wednesday that neither fire department personnel nor police
could clearly see the charred remains in the car. The body wasn’t found
until Memphis Police took a closer look two days later.

Police say they couldn’t see body found inside burned vehicle at impound lot

Early Saturday morning, Memphis Police and firefighters responded to a car
on fire at Weaver and Tully Roads in southwest Memphis.

When the fire was out, MPD investigators took photos and completed a police
report, and the car was taken to the city impound lot.

That same morning, just hours later, the family of 20-year-old Jaderius Webb
filed a missing person report with the Horn Lake Police Department.

Two days later, Memphis PD says one of their officers who specializes in VIN
identification examined the burned car more closely to verify registration.
It was then they made the shocking discovery — human remains in the
   passenger side backseat.

Memphis Police are calling the case a homicide.

Horn Lake PD believes the remains belong to Jaderius, though official DNA
   confirmation is still pending.

WREG talked to his father on Wednesday. He said his son “wouldn’t hurt a
   fly.”

He said for the last few days he’s been doing his own investigation to get
answers about where Jaderius could be, saying he went to the scene where the
car was on fire and found his work boots and a gas can left behind.

He also said he called the impound lot. Someone there told him the vehicles
“go through checks” and there was “nothing in the car.”

Security guard in Main Event shooting wasn’t licensed, records show

Sadly this case takes us back more than six years to 2018, when a 33-year-
old man was found with a gunshot wound in the back of a van that had been
towed to the impound lot. His body was there for nearly 7 weeks.

Then-police director Mike Rallings pledged a comprehensive review of
policies. Ultimately nine officers were disciplined, and eight were
   suspended.

“The victims deserve better, the family members of the victims deserve
better and our citizens deserve better,” Rallings said at the time.

MPD says while this case is being investigated as a homicide, the department
is also conducting a routine internal review of the incident.

In 2022, WREG investigators looked into the overcrowding of the thousands of
vehicles at the lot. MPD told us of a big issue then.

“Way over capacity,” said Colonel Doreen Shelton.

At the beginning of this year, a private company, Vehicle Management
Solutions, took over the operation of the impound lot to manage the issues.

Part of their contract shows a scope of services, saying “Each vehicle will
process through a number of checkpoints by experienced and trained
professionals,” and “Staff will conduct a full inspection walk-around with
   a
wireless handheld unit to inventory the vehicle.”
