XPost: alt.fan.rush-limbaugh, mn.politics, alt.politics.liberalism       XPost: talk.politics.guns, sac.politics       From: uncivilized.black@jungle-animals              A man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault in 2003 after       investigators struck a match on a DNA sample as part of an ongoing initiative       to address a statewide backlog in sexual assault test kits.              The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office has charged Shawn Skie, 48, of no fixed       address, with 1st-degree criminal sexual assault in connection with a sexual       assault that allegedly happened in St. Paul on Dec. 28, 2003.              The victim in the assault identified her attacker as Skie the day after the       incident, as she knew him as a friend. In January 2005, a "pick up and hold"       was issued for Skie, but the case was "pended" a month later "due to the       inability to contact various        witnesses and locate Skie."              The complaints notes that Skie "has had multiple dealings with police       throughout the almost 20-year period that this case went unsolved," and has       also been linked to two other cases that "are highly similar to this matter."              He wasn't formally charged until this year, when the Minnesota Bureau of       Criminal Apprehension examined the case and the test swabs taken from the       victim, part of a wider effort to reduce the backlog in sexual assault testing       kits collected in recent        decades.              A "periodic search" undertaken as part of the Statewide Sexual Assault Kit       Initiative confirmed Skie's DNA in one of the samples taken from the victim in       late 2003. He has since been arrested and has made his first court appearance.              According to the criminal complaint, the victim had been invited out to meet       with Skie, described as a "longtime friend," at a St. Paul bar on Dec. 28 to       say goodbye as he was moving to California to be with family.              During her second drink, the victim says she began to feel lightheaded and       disoriented, and has vague recollections of being in a vehicle with Skie       afterwards. Skie was smoking marijuana and blowing it into her mouth, despite       her asking to stop.              Skie then allegedly proceeded to rape the victim in the car, with the victim       telling police it "seemed like a dream and she was physically unable to fight       back."              Skie then left the vehicle, with the victim calling a friend who found her       disoriented and "rambling incoherently" in the vehicle, with $2,000 in cash       missing from her purse.              The victim reached out to friends and learned that Skie had returned home with       $2,000 in cash and told his girlfriend another girl had given it to him. A       sexual assault examination of the victim identified injuries consistent with       rape.              While the victim believes she was given the date-rape drug, toxicology tests       did not show any traces, though the complaint notes this is an "unsurprising       result given the very narrow window of detection for that drug, which is mere       hours within ingestion.       "              Traces of semen were also identified on the swabs taken from the victim,       although police didn't learn this until almost a year later.              When they spoke with the victim a year after the report, police were told that       Skie had contacted the victim about the assault and theft around "six times       over the past year through blocked numbers."              Per the complaint: "[Skie] also talked about returning the money and,       regarding the sexual assault, said, 'You were so messed up that you don’t       know what I did to you.'"              Police issued the pickup and hold order for Skie, who was believed to be in       Minnesota at the time, on Jan. 26, 2005, but he wasn't found before it expired.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
