   Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A southern Minnesota man charged with opening   
   fire on police officers during a violent home invasion in January has entered   
   a guilty plea to a federal charge.   
      
   31-year-old Kamau Evans was brought to federal court several days after he was   
   arrested in Minneapolis. The Mankato man had broken into a residence in North   
   Minneapolis on January 14 by shattering a sliding glass door. Court documents   
   say he then    
   allegedly assaulted two of the occupants with a firearm and brandished a   
   handgun at a child who was hiding in a closet while he was holding three   
   people against her will.   
      
   Court records say Minneapolis Police responded to the residence and were able   
   to take one of the victims out of the house. The officers then went into the   
   home protected by ballistic shields and came under fire when Evans appeared in   
   a stairwell as the    
   officers were walking up the stairs.   
      
   The criminal complaint states that following the shooting, Evans escaped from   
   the house by leaping from a bathroom window. He was captured and arrested   
   while attempting to flee through the backyard. A 9 mm semi-automatic pistol   
   was recovered by    
   Minneapolis Police on the side of the garage where Evans was apprehended.   
      
   The criminal complaint also stated that, earlier in the day, a woman called   
   911 and reported that a man, identified as Evans, had broken into her south   
   Minneapolis apartment. The woman indicated that she and her two children were   
   able to safely flee from    
   the home after Evans shattered a window into her bedroom.   
      
   According to federal prosecutors, Evans admitted to a charge of illegal   
   possession of a firearm as an armed career criminal. They say, due to previous   
   felony convictions, Evans was prohibited under federal law from possessing   
   firearms or ammunition at    
   any time.   
      
   His sentencing hearing has not been scheduled.
