   LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The third trial for Mauricio Torres begins on Monday,   
   Jan. 30 in Benton County, according to court documents.   
      
   Torres was found guilty of capital murder twice, once in 2016 and once in   
   2020, for raping and killing his 6-year-old son, Isaiah, in March 2015.   
      
   He was sentenced to death in 2016 for using a stick to sexually assault Isaiah   
   while the family was camping in Missouri.   
      
   The boy died at an Arkansas hospital the day after the assault.   
      
   Torres’ attorneys have said his actions were intended as punishment and the   
   father didn’t know they could kill the boy.   
      
   A medical examiner testified that the boy’s death was caused by a bacterial   
   infection resulting from sodomy and chronic child abuse.   
      
   The 2016 conviction was overturned by the Arkansas Supreme Court in 2019 due   
   to questions about jurisdictionand because prosecutors could not use rape as   
   justification for a capital murder charge.   
      
   Torres' 2020 trial ended in a mistrial when his stepson leaped out of the   
   witness stand and tried to attack him in court while testifying during the   
   sentencing phase.

   Torres now faces charges of capital murder and first degree battery.   
      
   Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty for him, according to our content

   Jury selection for the third trial is set to begin Monday.
