   The Bloomington man who fatally shot a 15-year-old girl near Lake of the Isles   
   last year has been sentenced to 12-and-a-half years in prison.   
      
   Antonio Brooks Jr., 20, pleaded guilty on Sept. 6 to the 2nd-degree   
   unintentional murder of Ka’Maih Johnson near the intersection of Girard   
   Avenue S. and 25th St. W. in July 2023. He was sentenced on Friday to 150   
   months in prison.   
      
   "My thoughts are with Ka’Maih’s family," Hennepin County Attorney Mary   
   Moriarty said.   
      
   "She should still be with her family. Instead, the community has lost another   
   young person to gun violence. Mr. Brooks will be held accountable for his   
   actions, but we must do more at every level to reduce the terrible impact of   
   gun violence in our    
   communities."

   According to the criminal complaint, one of Johnson's friends told police they   
   were driving around the area with three boys that night when Brooks Jr. texted   
   her, and they agreed to meet up.   
      
   Johnson's friend told investigators they were "laughing, joking and making   
   videos with [Brooks Jr.] when [he] stated. 'I'm going to shoot you all up,'"   
   the complaint states.   
      
   The friend said Brooks Jr. had made similar statements in the past, but he   
   never followed through. However, when speaking with police, In an interview,   
   she said Brooks Jr. stated: "You think I'm playing? I'm gonna shoot this   
   [b**ch] up."   
      
   She told police that she and Johnson got out of the SUV that Brooks Jr. had   
   arrived in and headed back to the original car they came in. Moments later,   
   the shot was fired.   
      
   When police arrived at the scene, they found Johnson lying in the street of 25   
   1/2 Street and Girard Avenue South, with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was   
   pronounced dead at the scene by EMS responders.   
      
   Investigators spoke to four witnesses, who all said they heard the gunshot,   
   and at least two witnesses saw Brooks Jr. raise the gun.   
      
   According to the complaint, one witness told police he saw Johnson "laughing   
   and running away from [Brooks Jr.]" when he heard the gunshot, charges state.   
      
   Another witness told police that Johnson was hanging out of an open window in   
   the back of the car when the shot was fired, and both vehicles sped off. She   
   said she didn't know Johnson had been shot and was left behind at the scene,   
   prompting her to ask    
   Brooks Jr. to pick her up.   
      
   Brooks Jr. said he would, but that he needed to drop off the gun first.   
      
   However, the boys the witness had initially arrived with picked her up later   
   and told her Johnson had been shot and taken to the Hennepin County Medical   
   Center.   
      
   The complaint states that the witness contacted Brooks Jr., who allegedly   
   "acknowledged his involvement in the shooting and apologized." He allegedly   
   deactivated his Facebook account and blocked the witness' cell phone number   
   and social media accounts.   
      
   A warrant for his arrest was issued on August 10, 2023, and he was arrested a   
   day later.
