(WLOS) — A man wanted in connection with a 2008 sexual       assault in Asheville has been arrested in Georgia and is now being extradited       back to North Carolina.              On August 3, 2008, the Asheville Police Department received a report of a       sexual assault in the area of South French Broad Avenue. A sexual evidence kit       was collected but wasn’t sent to the state lab for testing due to stringent       standards in place for        testing at the time.              DNA FROM APD RAPE KIT POINTS TO WANTED MAN NOW CHARGED WITH RAPE              Almost 10 years later, in March of 2018, after the State Bureau of       Investigation changed their minimum standards defining when a sexual assault       kit can be tested, the Asheville Police Department began auditing untested       sexual assault kits. Of the 573        untested kits, 275 meet the new minimum standards and were sent off for       testing.              One of those kits was from the 2008 sexual assault in the South French Broad       Avenue area.              DRASTIC INCREASE IN NC SEXUAL ASSAULT KIT SUBMISSIONS SHOWS NEED FOR MORE KIT       TEST FUNDING              In November of 2018 APD was notified that the kit from the incident matched a       suspect's sample, Gerald Davis, in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System       (CODIS). Based on the evidence, APD charged Davis on December 11, 2018, with       Second Degree Forcible Rape.              Over two years later, on April 28, 2021, the Asheville Police Department says       Davis was located in Atlanta and is now being extradited back to North       Carolina.              https://wlos.com/news/local/man-wanted-in-asheville-sexual-assau       t-cold-case-arrested-in-georgia-gerald-davis              --- SoupGate-DOS v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
