   A 47-year-old homeless sex offender who was accused of raping a woman near the   
   east end stairs of the Steel Bridge in March was sentenced Tuesday to more   
   than six years in prison.   
      
   A 20-year-old woman who had just moved to Portland reported on March 11 that   
   she had left a party and was walking near the Willamette River alone in the   
   early morning hours when a stranger pushed her down. In the process, she hit   
   her head on a rock and    
   lost consciousness, she said.   
      
   She told police she awoke and discovered the man -- identified as Clarence Ray   
   Williams -- raping her. She ran off without her shoes.   
      
   Samples taken during a sexual-assault examination found Williams’ DNA.

   Investigators say Williams stole the victim's credit cards, which he used at   
   various locations. When police tracked him down, Williams said he had done   
   drugs with the woman and the two then had consensual sex.   
      
   Earlier this month, Williams pleaded no contest in Multnomah County Circuit   
   Court to first-degree sexual abuse and attempted first-degree rape. He must   
   undergo sex-offender treatment, and register as a sex offender. As part of the   
   plea agreement, he also    
   was sentenced to 10 years of probation.   
      
   Williams had been deemed a sex offender for a 1991 third-degree rape   
   conviction. He also had failed to register as a sex offender in the past.
