i think you are sadly mistaken here... FPC and Lazarus are very compatible
with delphi stuff... they are a little behind but there's a reason for that...
in any case, you should take another look before throwing the baby out with
the bath water...

FWIW: i run trunk versions of both FPC and Lazarus... my Lazarus is built with
the FPC trunk, too... you really should look at it and maybe even follow the
mailing lists where a lot of development discussion goes on... especially
recent discussions among the FPC developers about character set support ;)
