Depends(tm)...if you're in California, they use a cover on the pump nozzle
to seal the nozzle to tank connection. Fumes don't flow as readily in that
case.
Texas pump nozzles don't have that feature, so yes, smoking could be
detrimental to your health in more ways than one, as well as it is
illegal to do here as well.
