I don't think these were ever made out of stainless steel.  Seems to be cost
cutting - and have seen this will all the automakers.  

Part of it I think is because they really don't want the vehicles to last.
They want you to buy new ones every 3-5 years.  I don't fit that mold.

Speaking of the rust issue, cheap outdoor grills (and even some expensive
ones) do the same thing.  

If it is something that will be outside in the elements and you want it to
last, you must use materials that don't rust.
