I had a similar Starter o na 1971 VW Square back. At times the starter
woudl niot wrok and crawling under the car and bridging the solenoid
woulr gwet it to work for a while. Even though the car was uinder the
Warranty the VW Dealer woudl do nothing for me because it wroked whn
they tried it. When it failed on a trip. Luckly in a mini mall with a
Auto parts Store I decided to Change the starter. Only problem is it was
during a wind strom and sand was blowing everywhere. Never had that
problem again
That job was not as bad as changing a 1951 Ford Three speed tranny in a
gravel parking lot with no rug to lay on. :-)
