Awhile back I posted a question as I am shopping around for a truely 4wd
car/truck vs an AWD SUV.  Last winter I drove around visiting patient in the
most horrific weather.  I have a Ford Escape, the older boxy one which is
based on the Mazda Tribute. I have some agressive tires on it for some
offroad etc and it has pretty fair grown clearance in comparison to the other
SUVs but, when it comes down to it, a selectable 4wd vehical would be great
because of those really tough situations.  I also live near lots of beaches
that have off road access.  I was leaning towards a Jeep Grand Cherokee with
a diesel but what are the other choices?  It seems that most have terrible
mileage.  I had leased a Nissan Frontier when my car was in the shop once and
found it had true 4w drive and it did well in 2wd unless you really needed
it.  This is a nice feature. The Frontier gets less than 17 mpg however.
Economic choices are limited.  What else is out there? is my question.
