Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has to recheck hundreds of non-delivered 737 MAX
aircraft to repair an electronic defect. The issue is remarkable because the
737 MAX has previously been grounded for months after two deadly disasters in
a short space of time.
 
It was revealed on Friday that dozens of aircraft from airlines such as United
Airlines, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are temporarily unable to
fly again. The Chicago-based manufacturer has identified the potential problem
with some MAX devices and has warned several customers who have aircraft with
the serial numbers affected not to use the aircraft. According to the FAA
aviation authority, this is a manufacturing problem that affects a specific
group of aircraft rather than the entire fleet.
 
The 737 MAX has been grounded worldwide since spring 2019 after two accidents
within months. In both cases, a safety system was found to push the nose of
the aircraft down repeatedly, even when it was not necessary. The crashes in
Indonesia and Ethiopia killed hundreds of people.
 
The aircraft were only released for use again a few months ago. Today's
problem is not related to the problem that caused the crashes and it is not
expected to take much time to fix it. But the problems most likely mean
another dent in confidence in the aircraft manufacturer.
