Police have arrested a stowaway hiding in the landing gear of an American
Airlines plane. He flew almost unnoticed from Guatemala City to Miami in this
way on Sunday.
 
The 26-year-old man had climbed aboard the Boeing 737-800 in Guatemala and
miraculously survived his adventure: at cruising altitude the temperature can
drop considerably and the air is also low in oxygen. The man was arrested and
taken to hospital.
 
It is common for stowaways to crawl into the landing gear of an airplane. No
fewer than 129 illegal migrants have been found there since 1947 in the US
alone. Most of them did not survive their journey.
