Emirates CEO Tim Clark wants the airline to have 110 Airbus A380s operational
by the end of next year. Currently, about twenty aircraft are grounded due to
technical issues.
 
Currently, 94 Superjumbos are flying for Emirates. The total fleet consists of
116 aircraft, of which about twenty are not operational. The idle aircraft are
parked at Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central, among other
locations. Clark declined to comment on the details of the defects.
 
Emirates is currently buying leased A380s. The CEO plans to keep this type in
its fleet until 2041. However, Clark acknowledges that keeping the Superjumbo
operational beyond its intended twenty-year lifespan is a challenge.
 
The airline is heavily dependent on the parts supply chain. Emirates is
searching for replacement engines and specific components, among other things.
However, the airline has a significant stock of parts from dismantled A380s,
he told Aviation Week at the APG World Connect conference in Seville.
