Travelers in the US cannot count on financial compensation if their flight is
delayed, unlike in the European Union. Plans for this, drawn up by the former
Biden administration, have been definitively scrapped by President Donald
Trump.
 
In the event of a cancellation, airline passengers are entitled to refunds,
but the idea was to also compensate them for lengthy delays.
 
This would have meant compensation of up to $300 per person for domestic
delays of at least three hours, and a maximum of $775 per person for delays of
nine hours or longer on long-distance flights.
 
The Trump administration sees no merit in the plans, which would cost airlines
a lot of money and create a significant administrative burden.
 
In September, it was already announced that the bill would likely be
torpedoed, after which Democratic senators made a final plea to implement the
consumer-friendly rule.
