XPost: ba.politics, dc.media, soc.penpals       XPost: alt.burningman       From: uy@libscum.com              The two-year search for an accused child molester ended Monday       in a wild shoot-out at a West Village smoke shop that left the       suspect dead and three lawmen wounded.              Charles Mozdir opened fire with a .32-caliber revolver when the       officers tried to pry him out of the Smoking Culture shop on W.       Fourth St. where he had been working as a salesman.              “They came in to talk to him and he just opened fire,” said       Aksana Freeman, a manicurist at a nearby store who sometimes       shared a smoke with Mozdir.              The officers returned fire, mortally wounding the 32-year-old       suspect, who later died at Bellevue Hospital.              NYPD Det. Mario Muniz, 45, was shot at least twice in the       stomach and was undergoing surgery at Bellevue, sources said.              On the force for 21 years, Muniz was expected to survive, the       sources said. He is the second NYPD officer shot in the line of       duty this year.              Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said it’s likely that the       bullet-proof vest Muniz was wearing saved his life.              "We appreciate their bravery, their strength, their       decisiveness," Mayor de Blasio said. “We're going to make sure       each one of them is taken care of."              Two wounded U.S. Marshals, Ryan Westfield and Pat Lin, were also       being treated at the hospital. Their conditions were not       immediately available, but they, too, were expected to make it.              Charles Dunne, chief marshal for the Eastern District of New       York, said the wounded lawmen had worked hard to earn spots on       the fugitive task force.              "They are both alert and they said they are anxious to get out       of the hospital and back to work," Dunne said.              Westfield’s neighbor said, “We're here for him if he needs       anything."              “He's just the nicest young man — very pleasant and sociable,”       said Grace Marinello, 61, in Livingston, N.J. “And he's really       kind. He adopts rescue dogs and has two Boxers at the moment.”              Mozdir, who was wanted for molesting a friend’s 7-year-old son,       was brought to justice after his sick story was told on the July       20th episode of CNN’s new series "The Hunt with John Walsh,”       which features the former “America’s Most Wanted” host.              A former wedding photographer from a San Diego suburb, Mozdir       vanished after failing to show up for his June 2012 arraignment.              Walsh told the Daily News that after the show aired an anonymous       tipster called to say Mozdir was working in lower Manhattan at a       restaurant near where he was eventually found.              After CNN ran a repeat of the Mozdir episode on Sunday, Walsh       said they got a second tip that included the address of the       smoke shop.              Both tips were immediately forwarded to law enforcement, Walsh       said.              “The marshals went right to work and saddled up with the NYPD —       they don't risk their lives unless they're pretty sure they're       on the right track,” he said.              Muniz and the marshals arrived at the store around 1 p.m., and       the detective went inside to see if he was there, police sources       said.              When Muniz spotted the wanted man, he ducked outside to get the       marshals, they said. Mozdir began shooting when the trio walked       in.              “He winged three of them, but thank God they're going to be       okay," Walsh said of the wounded officers.              Mozdir had been accused of molesting another boy and       investigators found sickening images of child pornography and       bestiality on his cell phone and computers after he disappeared.              He was considered armed and dangerous after a roommate warned       cops that he was armed with two guns, and that he had threatened       to kill himself and a victim's father.              For people like Freeman who thought they knew the quiet and       polite salesman, word that Mozdir was a wanted sex fiend was       almost as shocking as his bloody end.              “A sex offender? I had no idea,” said Freeman, 45. “He smoked       electronic cigarettes with me. We just made small conversation.       The weather, how are you doing, the usual stuff.”              Walsh said Mozdir can’t hurt anyone anymore.              "Mozdir was killed and that spares his victim's family a lot of       pain and anguish," he said. "I don't believe in vigilantism, but       this guy was alleged to have molested children before and now       this family can take a deep breath. They'll be spared a trial,       which is torturous.”              While this is the first capture for Walsh’s new show, he has a       long history of helping law enforcement nab fugitives.              His long-running Fox show, "America's Most Wanted," was       responsible for helping to bust 1,261 fugitives and recovering       61 missing children — including Elizabeth Smart, who kidnapped       from her Salt Lake City home in 2002 at the age of 14.              With Rocco Parascandola, John Marzulli and Joe Kemp              tmoore@nydailynews.com              http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/u-s-marshal-nypd-       detective-shot-west-village-authorities-article-1.1882825                             --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
