XPost: ba.politics, dc.media, soc.penpals       XPost: alt.burningman       From: more@incompetence.com              San Bernardino >> A Cajon High School math teacher used a racist       slur while referring to black students in her class, according       to a student’s family.              San Bernardino City Unified School District officials later       acknowledged that a Cajon High teacher used “inappropriate       language” in class and that “disciplinary action” was taken.              LaRue Bell, a senior at Cajon High, was in Bernadette Yuson’s       seventh-period math class on Sept. 3, when he said Yuson began       rearranging student seating.              “‘How come you’re moving all the black people around?’” Bell       said he asked.              “Because I want to move all the n-----,” Yuson allegedly said,       to the reported shock of the class.              Bell leapt to his feet to report the incident to the school       administration.              “‘Go ahead and tell them,’” he said Yuson told him. “‘I’ve got a       lawyer and pay him every month.’”              According to Bell’s family, he initially received a lukewarm       reaction from the administration. A staff member advised him to       ignore racist teachers, focus on his grades and upcoming       graduation. An administrator called Bell’s mother, Vanessa       Murray, to report that Bell had left class, but not what had       prompted him to do so.              The day after the incident, on Sept. 4, an administrator called       Bell in to investigate the complaint and, according to Bell,       talked to other students from the class and verified his story.              Murray said the administrator told her, “‘She doesn’t mean any       harm. I’ll get her to apologize.’”              At Bell’s request, the administrator gave him a new class       schedule with a different math teacher.              Although school districts typically don’t comment on individual       staff members’ disciplinary issues, citing privacy concerns, San       Bernardino City Unified officials acknowledge that a Cajon High       teacher did step over the line.              “On Sept. 3, we became aware of a complaint about inappropriate       language used during class by a Cajon High teacher,” district       spokeswoman Linda Bardere wrote in an email Friday afternoon.       “We launched a fair and deliberate investigation regarding the       matter and we took quick and decisive disciplinary action once       all of the facts were in.”              The unnamed Cajon High teacher violated school board policy       4200b, according to Bardere, which states “all certificated       employees shall not use abusive or obscene language in the       presence of students and/or parents. This shall include       derogatory, racial or ethnic remarks.”              (“Certificated employees” are those with a teaching       certification.)              “We regret that in this instance board policy was not followed       and we apologize for the teacher’s unacceptable choice of       words,” Bardere wrote. “We can assure the public that the       district took the student’s complaint seriously and at no time       did any district employee minimize the gravity of the impact of       the teacher’s words.”              That’s not good enough for Murray: “I want her fired. I want her       fired.”              And what Yuson hasn’t done, Bell said, is acknowledge that she       did anything wrong.              “She didn’t even apologize,” he said. “She didn’t say sorry this       had happened.”              Cajon High School’s 2,782-member student body was 16 percent       black during the 2013-14 school year, according to the       California Department of Education.              Yuson could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.              http://www.sbsun.com/social-affairs/20140912/exclusive-san-       bernardino-teacher-accused-of-racist-slur-in-classroom                             --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
