The Arizona Democratic Party is disparaging a Republican
gubernatorial candidate, Karrin Taylor Robson, in an apparent
attempt at helping Trump-endorsed GOP rival Kari Lake, figuring
the latter would be easier to beat in November.

The state party sent out a statement Tuesday detailing past
donations to Democratic candidates from Robson, a wealthy
businesswoman and state university system regent.

"While Robson uses her millions to buy TV ads and hide her true
self, voters just aren't buying what she's selling. And it's no
surprise — this is precisely the kind of political hypocrisy
that aggravates people," said Arizona Democratic Party
spokeswoman Josselyn Berry. "As the Republican primary for
governor continues to stir toxic infighting, the Arizona
Democratic Party will always be grateful for Robson's longtime
support in helping elect Democrats up and down the ballot,
   including this November."

It's a playbook Democrats are using around the country in the
2022 election cycle. For example, shortly before the May 17
Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial primary, Attorney General
Josh Shapiro, who had the Democratic nomination locked up,
launched a campaign advertisement designed to boost state Sen.
Doug Mastriano, a Republican candidate some in the party worry
may not fare well in the general election.

And ahead of Colorado's June 28 Republican Senate primary, a
liberal super PAC ran ads highlighting the conservatism of state
Rep. Ron Hanks, a 2020 election skeptic questioning, without
evidence, the legitimacy of President Joe Biden's win. But that
effort fell flat, as Hanks fell in the Republican primary to
   construction company owner Joe O'Dea.

In Arizona, Lake's GOP gubernatorial primary battle with Robson
is a proxy fight of sorts between former President Donald Trump
and retiring Gov. Doug Ducey. The Republican governor, who can't
seek reelection after two terms, has endorsed Robson as his
successor. The primary winner will face Secretary of State Katie
Hobbs, who will be the Democratic gubernatorial nominee after
   the Aug. 2 primary.

It's a risky strategy for Democrats should their nominees lose
in November, particularly to GOP rivals Democrats consider unfit
for high office. Lake is a leading election skeptic. So is
Mastriano, who led late 2020 efforts to stop his state from
   submitting Biden electors to Congress.

Still, Arizona Democrats seem to be betting that as the more
centrist candidate, Robson would be harder to beat in the
general election. They are boosting Lake in the hopes that her
close ties to Trump and his platform will be unpalatable to the
majority of voters in the swing state.

“Just like Democrats are meddling in GOP primaries across the
country, they’re trying desperately to boost Kari Lake in
Arizona because they prefer to run against her in November,"
Matthew Benson, spokesman for Robson's campaign, told the
Washington Examiner. "The Democrats aren’t dumb — they’ve seen
the polling and know Karrin Taylor Robson’s conservative record
and broad coalition will be unbeatable in the general election.”

The latest poll found Robson and Lake in a near dead heat three
weeks before the Aug. 2 primary. Lake was polling at 39% among
GOP primary voters, while Robson has 35.3%, according to a
HighGround survey, with a 4.9% margin of error. The survey
included 400 voters from across the state surveyed from July 2-
   7. About 20% of voters remained undecided.

Democrats in Illinois successfully backed Trump-aligned
candidate Darren Bailey in their state's Republican
gubernatorial primary, prompting scorn from the GOP for
meddling. Many Republicans hoped that a centrist mayor would win
the primary, thinking he had a better chance of beating
Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker in November.
