Ok... My bad. New unread messages to the user currently logged in. Currently
the message area list might look like:

Unread  Conference             Description

2       fido.AFTERSHOCK         AFTERSHOCK Discussion
259     fido.AMATEUR_RADIO      AMATEUR RADIO / HAM RADIO
1       fido.BBBS.ENGLISH       The International BBBS Support Echo
246     fido.COFFEE_KLATSCH     Gossip and chit-chat echo

I was thinking of maybe something that looked like:

Unread  Conference              Description

2       fido.AFTERSHOCK         AFTERSHOCK Discussion
259(2)  fido.AMATEUR_RADIO      AMATEUR RADIO / HAM RADIO
1       fido.BBBS.ENGLISH       The International BBBS Support Echo
246(3)  fido.COFFEE_KLATSCH     Gossip and chit-chat echo

The "(2)" and "(3)" in the second example above would indicate that there were
that many unread messages addressed to the current logged in user in those
respective areas.
