i remember watching folks fighting on winwhatever just to try to get a working
virtual modem setup... there were a few options out there but they didn't work
half as well as what i've been using since the dawn of time and they were a
lot more expensive...

yes, there are some viable options today but i don't like them... but that's
me... i just don't see why one should connect and then (transparently) be
shuffled off thru another protocol to access a bbs... i won't even mention the
problems with being able to perform downloads and such... ANSI? that's getting
harder and harder to find support for...

there's a lot of things involved, though... runing a VM? on a machine with
only 512M RAM? really? and what's the main OS and other tasks going to use?
then there's the speed concerns... VMs are slower and the whole machine is
going to be slower over all... thanks but no thanks... i prefer real iron to a
VM any day... especially when it comes to security and ensuring that traffic
flows thru the network connections properly...

i don't doubt that one bit... i went thru similar when i went from 3 nodes on
DOS 3-6 in DESQview to OS/2 with its GUI and all the other features it
brought...

now if i can get my software author to wake up and either release a new beta
with fixes for the known bugs in the current beta OR release the code to
someone who knows the language and can fix the bugs, then things will be a lot
better off... until then, i run what i have and deal with the bugs as best i
can...
