most distribution is/was to and from a mesh... specifically a three hub
mesh... at one time there was another distribution system that had more than
three hubs meshed... all of them were intermeshed and they fed second level
hubs which then fed leaf nodes and third level hubs... this other distribution
system was also connected to the three hub mesh by a common system... that
common system caught all the dupes... then there was a third distribution
system that came along... i don't recall its structure but it was also linked
to the other two by that same common system...

one of the other things that has happened in fidonet is that some folks
decided to go intermeshed between nodes and there is no real hubs... that's
all fine and good as it has finally been realized that anyone can get a
connection from anywhere they can set up an agreement... unfortunately it also
blows moderator control away where moderators cannot call for feed cuts to
disconnect unruly systems... anyway, not all of those systems are fully
meshed... the only real goal is for one to have more than one link for an
echo...
