   Granville Island has become a tourist spot, a shopping mecca, a place of   
   relaxation and entertainment.  One might say it is the 'hub' of all   
   things that reflect Vancouver's best.   
   And now the Harper government is making a move on it - to transfer   
   ownership to Port Metro - which is involved in terminals for the   
   shipment of goods.  Industrial sites doing big, dirty, noisy stuff.   
      
   Take a look at the terminals listed below and the companies which use   
   them.  Note especially the name Kinder Morgan for oil and gas; Canexus   
   for chemicals; Stanovan for gas, diesel.   
   This is not good news.  And Vancouverites had better take political   
   action quickly.

   Granville Island's potential takeover by Port Metro Vancouver shocks   
   merchants   
   Small business owners, former trustee concerned about losing space that   
   "doesn't exist anywhere else"   
      
   Small business owners and a former trustee on Granville Island are upset   
   that management of the Vancouver landmark may transfer from Canada   
   Mortgage and Housing to Port Metro Vancouver.   
      
   Local media outlets reported Wednesday that responsibility for the   
   popular tourist destination, full of alternative stores and a busy,   
   local market, could be transferred from the federal housing agency to   
   the port authority.   
      
   Karin Edworthy, who has had a shop, Ainsworth Custom Design, on   
   Granville Island for 13 years, says she's worried a new landlord — like   
   Port Metro Vancouver — could destroy what she spent years building.

   "I got a knot in my stomach when I heard," said Edworthy.   
      
   "The decision of changing who's in charge of managing down here has a   
   direct impact on what my life would be like."   
      
   Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is opposed to the transfer and has   
   asked that the land be transferred or leased to the City of Vancouver or   
   transferred to another body that is not Port Metro Vancouver.   
      
   Both CMHC and the Port are federal institutions.
