When Brian Mulroney was campaigning for the leadership of the Progressive   
   Conservative Party (PCP) he appeared before the members of the Montreal Board   
   of Trade who were having lunch and said, "I went down into the trenches during   
   the 1980 Referendum and    
   fought with the separatists. What better qualifications can a man have than   
   that to be leader of the PCP and Prime Minister of Canada?" Every newspaper in   
   the country printed this.   
      
   Tom Mulcair mentioned his participation in the referendum to electors when he   
   ran for a seat in the Quebec National Assembly and on the Internet when   
   running for the leadership of the federal NDP. Mulcair gave full credit to Mr.   
   Claude Ryan as the Leader    
   of those opposed to any change in relations between Quebec and Canada. He says   
   that Ryan mentored him during the referendum and that he considers Ryan to be   
   a role model.
