Hmmm . . . could be that Harper is now having to replace the same police
officers that he cut from the force less than a year ago. Remember this, dim

RCMP in B.C. faces funding cuts to organized crime, homicide units

The RCMP in B.C. is facing millions of dollars in provincial funding cuts for
the coming year, creating a budget squeeze that the Mounties say will lead to
staffing reductions in its organized crime and homicide units.

Although the Ministry of Justice said Wednesday that the province is cutting
$3 million in funding to the RCMP for the 2014-15 budget year, a statement
later in the day from the Mounties' commanding officer in B.C. put that figure
   at $4.2 million.

Either way, the cuts amount to about one per cent of the $325 million the
province contributes to the RCMP, which constitutes 70 per cent of the force's
overall costs in B.C. The federal government pays the remaining 30 per cent.

In his statement Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens said the B.C.
force has already cut down on travel, administrative and training costs in
recent years, and so the only remaining area in which to find savings is
   policing services.

Callens said he is being forced to cut $2.8 million from the budget for the
anti-gang Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, eliminating 12 positions.
The Major Crimes program will see $1.4 million in cuts, which will include the
   reduction of 13 full-
   time investigators.

"We remain committed to delivering quality police services to British
Columbians," Callens said. "However, policing costs money and we have less to
work with. There will be fewer police officers available in these specialized
   areas tomorrow than there
   were yesterday."
