   Police arrested a South Torrance High School teacher on Monday,   
   Dec. 3 on suspicion of sexually assaulting a former student who   
   was underage at the time of the alleged incident.   
      
   A tip from the public led authorities to suspect that Kevin   
   McElwee, 49, of San Pedro, may have had a sexual encounter with   
   a minor in 2012, according to Sgt. Ronald Harris of the Torrance   
   Police Department. He said the English teacher was interviewed   
   by police, then arrested at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday.   
      
   Police did not immediately specify whether, at the time of the   
   incident, the minor was a student or a former student.   
      
   A police statement said the investigation involved a “sexual   
   assault incident.”   
      
   McElwee was held on suspicion of contacting a minor with the   
   intent to commit a sexual offense and soliciting a person for a   
   lewd act, according to Harris. The Torrance Unified School   
   District placed him on administrative leave shortly after   
   learning about the allegations made against him, according to a   
   district statement issued on Monday.   
      
   “The district has a strict non-fraternization policy. Prior to   
   the accusations made against him there was not any indication of   
   misconduct. Since this is an active police investigation the   
   district cannot provide any further comment at this time,” the   
   district said in the statement.   
      
   McElwee was hired by Torrance Unified in January 1996,   
   according to Tammy Khan, a spokeswoman for the district. She   
   said he had also previously coached the boy’s volleyball team,   
   but hasn’t coached for the past five years.   
      
   Investigators were examining evidence in order to identify any   
   other potential victims, according to a news release from the   
   Torrance Police Department. Police asked anyone with information   
   relevant to the case to call them at 310-328-3456.
