   MARTINEZ — A former Walnut Creek science teacher who had been   
   charged with 16 counts related to child molestation accepted a   
   prison term of 25 years to life in a plea deal Thursday.   
      
   Michael Bartel, 34, was arrested last November in a “To Catch a   
   Predator”-style sting, but the case quickly blossomed when   
   authorities identified a boy and a girl he had sexually abused.   
   Both victims were under 10 years old at the time, prosecutors   
   said.   
      
   At the time of his arrest Bartel was a teacher at the Walnut   
   Creek Intermediate School. Police said at the time they found no   
   evidence he abused any students at the school.   
      
   On Thursday morning, Bartel pleaded no contest to two counts of   
   lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under 10 years old, along   
   with an enhancement for multiple victims. The mother of his   
   victims spoke in court.   
      
   “Looking back, was it worth it to you?” the woman asked Bartel,   
   who stood in a courtroom holding cell. “I hope you can come to   
   understand exactly what you’ve lost, because it’s more than your   
   freedom. You have lost everything.”   
      
   This newspaper is not publishing the woman’s name because of a   
   policy to protect the identities of child molestation victims.   
      
   Police began investigating Bartel after a tip from an online   
   chatroom user. An undercover officer started chatting with him,   
   and offered Bartel a chance to molest the officer’s fictional   
   teenage son. Bartel was arrested after he agreed to it and   
   arranged to meet the undercover cop, prosecutors said.   
      
   The 16 counts prosecutors filed against Bartel included   
   distributing child pornography, arranging to meet a minor for   
   sex and various child molestation counts. Under the terms of the   
   sentencing, Bartel will be eligible for parole after 25 years,   
   and can reduce his sentence by up to 15 percent through good   
   behavior.
